Becoming “Elect”. The mass of sending

by Alex Mendez

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles held a special mass this weekend at Our lady of the angels Cathedral in downtown. Church goers were treated to the Rite of acceptance mass for catechumens who were presented by Archbishop Jose H. Gomez as being prepared to receive the holy sacraments.

Those of catholic faith consider baptism a rite of passage and for many this is their way into conversion into the catholic faith.  It was a new experience for myself being able to witness this ceremony. Most people receive the first of the sacraments as they are baptized as children automatically gaining entrance into the catholic faith. Catechumens are those who are ready to become Catholics and are undergoing studies in order to prepare to receive these rites on Holy Saturday.

Speaking to Kevin Martin one of the attendees about the mass and its meaning he said the following “I came today to support my brother who is joining the catholic faith. This is a very special ceremony and it is fun to watch and a be a part of.” Kevin seemed very excited and eager to get into the cathedral. He only spoke for a little claiming that the event would be full and there was a need to save seats for his family.  The amount of people who were strolling in on a Sunday evening to downtown was remarkable.

After the ceremony and celebrations I spoke to a mother whose child participated in the ceremony. I asked her to explain what had just occurred and what this meant to their family.

Samantha Neves “We are very excited and I loved the ceremony. This particular ceremony just feels more special because the Archbishop is involved. My son is doing Sunday mass schooling and these classes prepare them for baptism, communion and conformation. The ceremony was beautiful, the night is beautiful and now were off to celebrate”

The celebration was held in this beautifully designed church and now all its parish members are off to celebrate

So this is really happening?

Where you at El Niño?

By Alex Mendez

Its here and its real, get your sunscreen out because it just got hot in California. Not even 2 weeks ago Californian’s were dealing with gusty winds and chilling weather. According to a report published by the washing post Long beach set a new record high of 90 degrees for the month of February breaking the previous mark of 86 degrees. I set out to speak to students at Cal state Long beach about their theory as to why things are heating up.

Here’s what students had to say as to what’s causing the heat

Robbie M. “Its insane, Its gotten so hot were literally in beach weather. Maybe its global warming.  ”

Robbie’s friend had a different opinion

Kylie H. “it cant be global warming the Chinese are just making us believe that, I’m a political science major and Donald Trump dispelled global warming and said the Chinese made that S@#t up. So we cant blame global warming because that doesn’t exist.”

Although we all a shared in a good laugh about the Republican front runners remarks, could we be witnessing the effects of climate change? Climate Scientist Bill Patzert speaking on a radio talk show claimed that although “El Niño” which was suppose to hit us hasn’t but definitely will. According to Bill Patzert we can expect things to cool down and get rainfall in March and April. He explains that as el Niño weakens it will come down to southern California, giving us heavy rains.
